“Who goes to war at any time at his own charges? Who plants a vineyard, and does not eat of the fruit thereof? Or who feeds a flock, and doesn’t eat the milk of the flock? Do I say this as a man? Does not the Law say the same thing also? For it is written in the Law of Moses, You shall not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treads out the corn. Doth God take care of the oxen?… If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things? (1 Co 9:7-11)
In 1st Corinthian’s chapter nine Paul penned his most profound piece about the personal needs of Christian ministers. Not touching this subject for about two years Paul finally speaks to the Corinthian’s bluntly and in bold terms. Paul articulated something every Christian should read mindfully, including ministers.
Paul speaks of supporting ministers with the purest intentions. In verses 12 he wrote; “nevertheless we (He and Barnabas) have not used this power; but suffer all things, lest we should hinder the gospel of Christ.” Then in verse 15 Paul added; “But I have used none of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be done UNTO ME: for it is better for me to die than any man should make my glorying void… Yea, wow is unto me if I preach not the gospel.”
There are many ministers who lose heart because they are not content with their provisions. To those, “abundant life” means a life of ease and luxury. On the other hand, some ministers misinterpret seasons of lack as a sign that God is not with them and come to think God’s will in our Great Commission isn’t preaching and teaching.
Paul’s exhortation is geared to motivate every believer to respect those called and to lend support to their spiritual task. However, it also serves to strengthen the resolve of those called to stay with their ministry regardless of their circumstances.
If a season of lack is any sign at all to a minister it is that Satan is effective (but only (temporarily) in deceiving Christians from exercising their faith in life’s great scheme of action – sowing and reaping. “He that observes the wind shall not sow; and he that regards the clouds shall not reap.” (Ecc 11:4)
Every Christian should extend support to ministers. In the same way, each minister should understand they serve like parents who are ready to “spend and be spent” (2 Cor 12:15) in the great call to nurture souls. That often means to suffering through seasons of lack for Christ’s sake. Ministers should have faith that God will supply if they faithfully do their duty. All who forsake this worlds goods for God’s sake will receive compensation “in this life” (Mark 10:28-30) as well as in the next world.
The church needs to understand the righteousness behind supporting ministers of Christ. Seasoned through the “things they suffer” prepares them to effectively build up the Body of Christ spiritually. It is a holy duty.
“Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? And they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar? Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.” (1Co 9:13-14)
Supporting those who preach the gospel is a holy duty too. God ordained it. It is an act of righteousness. “Righteousness exalts a nation.” (Pro 14:34) Our nation is in economic chaos today for what reason – bad politics’?
God’s word gives us a sound answer. Israel robbed God (Mal 3:8-10) by withholding the tithe from the Levites. Consequently that caused the Levites to forsake their spiritual duties and go off to work in secular “fields”. (Nehemiah 13:10) This resulted in neglecting the duties of studying God’s Word and priestly intercession for the people. A famine (Amos 8:11) of God’s Word (spiritual meat) was the downfall of the once great nation Israel. This same sinful process is working in America today.
Paul explained the minister with four illustrations. They are like warriors, like farmers, like a shepherd and the greatest servants (apostles) are like oxen (beasts of burdens). In all these the participant is cared for and expects to be.
In this Paul weighs heavy upon the Law of Moses to support his point. Yes, Paul was vocal in identifying the hindrance of the Law regarding salvation by grace, but he also understood that the Law was “Holy and just and good”. (Rom 7:12) Paul highlighted the Mosaic Law because as the “shadow of things to come” it gave an important reflection of the NT. It is wrong – seriously and grievously wrong to think walking in the light means shining less than what the shadow reflects. Christians have embraced doctrines of demons when thinking God requires the New Testament Saint to do less rather than more then the shadow reflects.
“Are these the words of a mere man? Doesn’t also the Law say the same thing? For it is written in the Law of Moses, You shall not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treads out the corn. Doesn’t God take care of the oxen too? Does God say this altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that plows should plow in hope; and that he that threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope.” (1Co 9:8-10)
Farmers plow their fields in hope of a harvest. So must the five-fold ministries “plough” and plant spiritual paths expecting provisions. Initially, the labor seems nonproductive, but later the fields will produce, for others and for their needs too.
Paul used the illustration of the ox in another epistle. Writing to Timothy Paul said; “Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, Do not muzzle the ox that treads out the corn, the laborer is worthy of his reward.” (1Ti 5:17-18)
The saints need oxen to tread out God’s Word and doctrines. It is a necessity for spiritual growth and the renewing of ones mind to the things of God. The Word is also necessary to distinguish between the voices of the spirit realm. (1 John 4:1)
So, Jesus ordained that His ministers be supported in a similar pattern of the OT system. Christian ministers are to focus on their duties regardless of their circumstances. Their work is a holy service. They should “plough in hope” but always keep plowing. That means they should serve with expectancy but never become “hirelings”. They are rightful “partakers” of the sacrificial offering for the “temple” and the “alter” of God.
Jesus laid the foundation of this truth. (Luke 10:7) Paul was simply passing down a truth not creating it. John heard Jesus say; “he that reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit unto life eternal: so both he that sows and he that reaps rejoice together.” (John 4:36)
“The next day after John (the Baptist) stood with two of his disciples; and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he said, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus”. (John 1:35-37)
Websters Dictionary defines loyalty: “to be faithful to an oath or obligation, to join an allegiance and remain devoted to it”. Loyalty is a great characteristic of Christianity. Every Christian should identify with Christ through loyalty.
In the reference above we have an example of Christian loyalty. John the Baptist was sent from God and understandably had committed followers. But we see something important from this reference. When John identified Jesus as the Lamb of God these Baptist converts immediately and without apology left John’s camp. They were not being disloyal to John - he was only a part of God’s great plan too. No, they were staying on course; continuing their allegiance and advance toward the Kingdom of God.
There was no hint of jealously or envy in John’s soul. He showed no propensity to overtly protect God’s flock. He did not hold his disciples back. In some circles loyalty has moved off-center because of jealously. A Christian’s loyalty is always to be to the Lord; not a denomination, not a manipulative group or controling individuals. Jesus paid the debt of your sins, you must maintain a loyalty to Him without compromise or sympathy.
I don’t mean to imply we should not be faithful to a church. Nor do I suggest we should not appreciate denominational oversight. On the contrary, we should respect churches, denominations and all sound doctrine. Christians are commanded to submit to all authority; church and civil authority. More so, we are commanded to be “subject one to another”. (1 Pet 5:5)
However, there is a perversion of loyalty in some circles of influence. Instead of “submitting as unto the Lord”, many demand loyalty to groups, fellowships or an organization instead of the Lord. Some are taught that God designed the Body of Christ to function exclusively through a chain of commanders since we are illustrated as a body that is subject to others body parts. While there is a truth in that the notions soons leads to error because every member is subject to the Head who is Christ. Dear God, the central feature of the NT is a personal relationship with Christ the head and a promise of intimate, personal direction from the Lord. To deny anyone of that is sin.
How often do we see Christians shunned after it is learned they attended another church or Bible study outside their control in search of a deeper understanding of God? How often do we see denominational leaders stress a loyalty to the denomination instead of Christ? Christians, when you let others reduce loyalty to manipulation, dominance and control freaks you become an active hindrance to spiritual growth too. Healthy Christian directors are identified by their eagerness to see membes freed from evil influences.
“For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household. He that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” (Mat 10:35-37)
It is not easy to separate or be seperated from friends and family to move on with Christ but God requires it. (Luke 9:57-62) It takes courage to “go on unto perfection” (Heb 6:1-2) as the scriptures encourage. The first Christians were Israelites under a strict religious system. They soon understood the cost to follow Jesus meant they would be outcasts. Any Jew who admitted they believed in Jesus was cast out of the synagogues. (John 9:22) Their relationships, sympathies and social status were ripped apart. However, forsaking unhealthy ties although always unpleasant has a purpose and a great outcome. Those who do want God will adjust and renew their loyalty to God.
Jesus initially separated from family and friends. They joined His allegiance later but at the first He suffered as an outcast from His own family for a season.
“And when his family heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself… There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him. And the multitude sat about him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without seek for thee. And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother, or my brethren? And he looked round about on them which sat about him, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother”. (Mark 3:21, 32-35)
Jesus’ family - including His mother the Virgin Mary - had difficulty accepting it when He broke away from the norm. His response was cool, calculated and unsympathic. It is consistent with what He requires of us. Jesus required even His mother to become loyal to God’s Will not her will or the will of others. Coming to hear God’s Word is doing God’s Will. Hearing it leads to believing it.
“Labor not for the meat which perishes but for that meat which endures unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed. Then said they unto him: What shall we do that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent.” (John 6:27-29)
God’s Word says “be ye separate”. (2 Cor 6:17) We have to cut away from unhealthy ties that are resistant to God’s will. Even when they are fellow Christians or if they are sincere relationships unknowingly resisting God’s will. Every Christian has to decide who they will center their loyally on.
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve;… but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. (Josh 24:15)
Christians, let your loyalty be centered on God’s Will. (Acts 4:13-21) Like the apostles, sometimes others will take the initiative against your loyalty to God. To encourage us in those times Jesus said this.
“Blessed are you, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake.” (Luke 6:22)
Christian leaders do have an obligation to “protect the sheep from wolves” but sometimes this is a shroud for controlling spirits. When the church is off center God sends a servant. He does not usually send a committee of men. God’s message does not need to be filtered it need to be considered. The idea that before you can voice a message from God to His people you must “join our program and commit to us” virtually guarantees the message will be compromised. That is not loyalty. It borders on lunacy. Concerning loyalty to God we need to embrace the fullness not strike a “balance”.
“I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven men.And whosoever speaks a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaks against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.” (Mat 12:31-32)
“But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost has never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:Because they said, He hath an unclean spirit.” (Mar 3:29-30)
Here is a portion of scripture that stands out like a sore thumb, seemingly unattached to any other teachings of scripture. However, it doesn’t stand alone.God requires two or three witnesses to confirm a truth.(Mat 18:16) So to understand this statement we need to interpret it in the light of the whole council of God in the scriptures.
Some will ask, why deal with such a frightening subject? Some I suppose do think the truths of God are “frightening” and will think they know better than God and want to protect people from hearing what Jesus said in this case. The fact is the main reason we seek to understand and then explain such issues is because they are part of God’s Word.According to Jesus “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God”.If we refuse to hear or deny others from hearing what Jesus said about blaspheming the Holy Spirit we are neglecting a part of God’s life.
Another very important reason to deal with this subject is because of the circumstances in which Jesus made the statement. He had just selected 12 disciples out of many striving to devote themselves to God, but they were still babes in the knowledge of God.Jesus didn’t say this privately to His elite inner circle of disciples. He did not hide it in a parable so the unbelievers might ponder it slowly. No, He resounded loud and clear for all to hear in straight talk.
Jesus spoke this out publicly and in plain language. Why?It was such a serious issue He required all to hear right away, including the tender babes who believed on Him as well the unsaved and unregenerate sinner. It is a sin so serious that all people need to know what it is and be forewarned. Why some would think to put it on the back burner and not seek to understand this is evidence of how pervasive darkness is in this generation.
Jesus said that all manner of sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men (of course that is dependent on our repentance and faith).Even blasphemy spoken against Himself, the Son of God He said would be forgivable. But Jesus said this sin; “Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit” shall never be forgiven.Mathew’s reported Jesus saying there is “never forgiveness in both this world and the world to come”.
Peter’s remembrance as the Spirit inspired his was written as Mark’s gospel. An additional clue is provided us that is most helpful in understanding the consequences Jesus wanted to convey. Those who blaspheme the Holy Spirit will never be forgiven but are still only “in danger of eternal damnation”.For years I didn’t consider the value of that bit of truth from God’s Word. The distinctions however are there for a reason.
God exhorts us to pay attention to details.Instruction such as: “study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman, rightly dividing the word of truth” has always stood out to me.Other exhortations from the lips of our Lord Himself; “search the scriptures”;“you do greatly err not knowing the scriptures or the power of God…”, and Moses instruction to the Israelites to “hearken diligently to the voice of my word” also stand out as exhortations to pay attention to details.
One of the strongest and clearest exhortations resounded in both Israel’s Law and the Lord’s final words in the Revelation given to John admonishes God’s servants; “you shall not add to my word neither shall you diminish anything from my words”. (Deu 4:2 & Rev 22:18-19)Every word of scripture was carefully weighed and voiced by God.
Let’s examine the Greek word translated Blasphemy in the text.It literally means; “to speak with verbal abuse’ and it “denotes the very worst type of slander, including bearing a false witnesses”.Its meaning also includes “wounding the reputation of someone by the use of whisperings, gossip, evil reports, evil speaking, foolish speaking, jesting, etc…
To blaspheme the Holy Spirit is not merely uttering from your lips uncontrolled four letter words at God.No, blasphemy is speaking sharp criticisms of resistance against the true ministry of the Holy Spirit (knowingly or unknowingly). It is the most serious of offences because it spoils the reputation of the Holy Spirit. It stirs up doubts and unbelief in the abilities of God to save, rescue and deliver to the uttermost. It pollutes people’s mind and destroys their confidence in the Holy Spirits power to come to their aid. This sin is so devastating that God will not ignore it, and will not forgive it in this life or in the hereafter.
The Spoiling Traditions of Men
Jesus had just cast out a deaf and dumb spirit or a spirit that didn’t talk.At the time the Jews had their own exorcist’s, who tradition tells us their only approach to casting out a demon was by learning its name. But in the case of a deaf and dumb spirit no communication was possible. So the Pharisees traditional belief system was this: He was doing something “beyond the limits handed down to man from God”.
As a result their conclusion was that Jesus must be using the powers of Beelzebub; their chosen name for the chief demons. How else could he command it out?Like many who lean more on their own thoughts rather than God, their logic was always to limit God’s power.
It is interesting to note that these accusers didn’t deny Jesus was casting out unclean spirits. In fact they actually acknowledged he was casting them out. However, their lack of understanding the integrity of God led them into perverse reasoning causing them to draw a false conclusion and creating confusion.
When the religious leaders claimed Jesus had cast out unclean spirit by the power of Beelzebub (their so named leader of evil spirits) Jesus’ reply was temperate. They spoke from lack of knowledge and their hateful spirit was responded to by Jesus in kindness. He did not condemn them directly. He did not command fire down from heaven.Instead He was temperate and tried to reason with them by asking them a question.
He asked; “How can Satan cast out Satan? Can a house divided, stand?”Jesus was not commanding evil spirits He was stopping their assignment.Jesus illustrated how people must first be bound before their goods can be spoiled. In a parable He exposed the strategy of the devil.
”And if Satan rise up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but has an end. No man can enter into a strong man’s house, and spoil his goods, unless he will first bind the strong man; and then he will spoil his house.” (Mar 3:26-27)
Satan is not the strongman in this illustration.Man is the strongman. Many have missed the point.I too was once confused by what Jesus meant.I thought Jesus was saying the strongman was the devil and that He came to bind the devil. But Jesus didn’t bind the devil; instead He loosed people who were bound by the devil.Jesus rebuked demons. He cast demons out of people’s lives.
Satan is one who strives to bind men with his lies and schemes and once bound up, he spoils our goods. The Christian has the goods not Satan. The goods are what the Holy Spirit supplies us with now through regeneration and the redeeming work of Jesus. But, unless know we have the goods how will we resist the devil?
The devil still practices thievery, deception and destruction. That despot will continue to take people captive if they by into his distortions of God.Demons persistently come to steal the good things God has promised to provide us with through the Holy Spirit. But, relying on the power of the Holy Spirit looses people from what binds them.Only by Gods Holy Spirit can people be released from unholy demonic influence, influences that if left alone and not dealt with might lead to demon possession.
Jesus emphasized in the illustration that only the cleansing forces of the Holy Spirit can cleanse the unclean ones. The Holy Spirit came to fulfill these purposes of God: “to set the captives free, to loose the bands of wickedness, to open the eyes of the blind, to set at liberty those that are bruised and to heal the brokenhearted.”(Luk 4:18-19)
Never once did Jesus bind the devil. We hear many Christians (I once was one of them) going around saying; “I bind you Satan in the name of Jesus”.But Satan is not bound by that command he only resisted. In truth, never once did Jesus bind the devil.Satan will not be bound until the end of the tribulation period and the second Coming. (Rev 20:1-3).
Close followers of Jesus were not confused on this point. The apostle John wasn’t afraid of the devil, he taught; “greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world”.Peter, whom Jesus once told; “Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven” (Mat 16:19) didn’t interpret that to mean he must or could bind him as if Satan was the strongman.Peter understood the sons of men were the strongman that Satan had bound, and now light had come to empower us to loose those that were bound.
Peter understood that Satan walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour”. Peter gave the antidote; “be sober, be vigilant;” and “resist him steadfast in the faith”.(1Pe 5:8-9)He didn’t say bind him, he said resist him.
James said the same thing; “resist the devil and he shall flee from you” (Jam 5:7). The NT doesn’t teach us we can bind the devil it tells us he seeks to and has bound people.Nowhere in Jesus’ history or the Apostles is there one case where Satan or any demon was bound. No, demons keep coming at us.
Furthermore, we can’t enter Satan’s house and bind him, he has no house. That is why demons seek to possess man and beast. When demons are cast out Jesus said they; “walk through dry places, seeking rest.”(Mat 12:43)They don’t have their own residence. That is why they strive to enter people and take possession. What is Satan’s strategy to accomplish that task?He lies about God!He distorts the scriptures. He tries to entangle us with inferior secular philosophies.
If you are influenced by demonic lies you are bound up and need to be loosed. The remedy is through embracing sound teachings, (Tit 1:9; Tit_2:1) going on unto deeper doctrinal knowledge (Heb 6:1-2) and drawing from the power of the Holy Spirit. These three things untie in us the twisted logic infecting the carnal mind. When we enter into the light, we enter into the glorious liberty of Christ Jesus.
The Unequaled Blasphemy
Initially their verbal attack was against Him personally. When their attack moved from being against Him personally to an attack against the Spirit in Him Jesus moved from a parable to the direct point of reference. He warned of the seriousness of blaspheming the Holy Ghost.
We know by way of definition that blasphemy refers to abusive slander that wounds the reputation of someone. When Jesus spoke of the ultimate worst kind of blasphemy it is revealed to us why.“Because they said He had an unclean spirit”.
I always thought of this sin was some big time slur, a slip of the tongue, or some dastardly statement that we should carefully avoid speaking at all cost. What I didn’t realize was that it could be identified. When we reflect on the “whole council of God” we find that there are other related scriptures given to better understand of Jesus’ point.
The Holy Spirit is a person, the third part of the trinity and so His reputation can be wounded by unclean and abusive slander. But, do you realize there are many features of the Holy Spirit? There is the fruit of the Spirit. For instance, joy; “joy unspeakable and full of glory” is fruit that is sometimes spoken against as emotionalism like when David danced before the Lord. His wife mocked his fruit of joy and she was not forgiven. (2Sa 6:13-23)
There are supernatural manifestations of the Holy Spirit often called the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Some, even Christians speak against some of the gifts of the Spirit. Some abusively say they are no longer necessary, no longer available, no longer manifesting. Some go so far as to say they are actually the work of the devil.
God does not strike those people dead for speaking against these always necessary gifts of the Holy Spirit, but they are not forgiven.Even in this life it is evidence by the fact that they suffer from being deprived of the benefits of God’s supernatural miracles.
There are also ministerial gifts, appointed offices of people who are specially anointed by the Holy Spirit.Jesus said they “who receive a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophets reward, they that receive a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous mans reward.”(Mat 10:41)
All good things we do and receive of from God will be rewarded by God, but it is always in a just measure.Reject prophets, apostles, evangelist, pastors, teachers and you are not forgiven. If you demean and devalue the status of a minister of Christ you will not be forgiven but lose out on the fuller reward you would have had if you received them.
There is only one Holy Spirit but according to scripture He has at least seven (7) expressions. (Isaiah 11)There is the Spirit of Wisdom, Knowledge, Understanding, Revelation, Council, Might, and Judgment (discernment).Speak against God’s ability to personally council a man, or deny His might (power and ability) to save from sin, sickness, etc….?You will not be forgiven that blasphemy and lose out on the reward.
The Holy Spirit’s promises include providing us “comfort”, “guidance into all truth”, “to teach us all things”, and “show us things to come”.(Joh 14:16; Joh 16:13)Furthermore, Paul once asked; “How is it then, brethren? When you come together, every one of you has a psalm, has a doctrine, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation.” (1Co 14:26)How else can things come to us if not through the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is our conduit to God and His throne.Clog your arteries with waste and the life flow of blood is cut off first in degree and if allowed, to death through a heart attack.
Jesus prefaced His charge against blaspheming the Holy Spirit by saying; “He who is not with me is against me”.Therefore, blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is speaking verbal abuse against any aspects of the Holy Spirit and every feature. This sin is paramount to all other sins.It is so bad it is unpardonable.
What did Jesus mean by saying there is “never forgiveness”?
My eyes would pop open when I read those words “never forgiven”.Like many my first instinct was to think the person lost their salvation or could never be saved and enter heaven. However that can’t be the case because it would make no sense to add the comment that the blasphemer was furthermore “in danger of eternal damnation”.
Strongs Greek definition points out that the word translated “damnation” reads as a “tribunal” in other manuscripts. Thus, the blasphemer of the Holy Ghost is “subject to the perpetual (eternal) justice tribunal (damnation)” is another way some might translate the phrase. If this is an accurate point it implies blasphemer’s do make heaven and face judgments since there is no tribunal in hell.Once in hell however, the damnation of hell is permanent.
We need to put the meaning of forgiveness in proper perspective.Forgiveness and unforgivness should not be thought of as do or die.A classic example of this is found in the leadership of Moses. He was Gods servant, one of Gods greatest. Two times Moses led the thirsty Israelites to a rock. The first time God told Moses through the Holy Spirit to take his rod and strike the rock.Miraculously water came flowing out.Israel’s thirst was quenched by the miracle supply.
However, the second time Israel needed water and were murmuring with fear God gave Moses new directions.God, through the Holy Spirit command Moses to speak to the rock before their eyes and it would give forth water. The intent was to testify to the emerging nation that Moses authority was by an anointing of the Holy Spirit.Moses did not pay attention to details.Instead Moses used the rod as he had used it in the past and struck the rock. The water flowed out at the second strike.
Immediately God announce a punishment to Moses. He would not cross over into the promise land with Israel because he had sinned through unbelief. (Num 20:7-13)
There are many instances in scripture (especially in the storyline of Israel’s Kings) that illustrate this truth. In this case, God did not forgive Moses because he rejected the Holy Spirit’s work in his own self. However, Moses did not lose out on heaven. He did not lose all his eternal rewards.Moses lost a temporal reward in his earthly life.He was not forgiven. He lost the privilege of a long awaited earthly inheritance. To illustrate this further, consider this portion of scripture.
“He that receives you receives me, and he that receives me receives him that sent me.He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. And whosoever shall give to a cup of cold water to one of these little ones only in the name of a disciple, verily…he shall in no wise lose his reward.” (Mat 10:41)
Here Jesus promised a different reward for different degrees of spiritual reception.God actually rewards what one believes and receives as endowed by the Holy Spirit.Jesus promised a reward for even the very smallest deed done.Just giving a drink of cold water to the least disciple receives a reward. However, a righteous mans reward goes to those who receive a righteous man. There is also a prophet’s reward for receiving a true prophet. It is better to receive a prophet’s reward than a righteous mans reward. The point is, what you receive as anointed and appointed of God shall be rewarded justly. In the same way, what one does not perceive as from God and is then rejected will not go unnoticed. It will not be forgiven and thus the person rejecting it does not receive its benefits.
God’s Reward System
“And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.”(Rev 22:12)
When the Lord returns He will reward every person, saint and sinner according to what they did in their life. This is eternal rewards.God will reward with perfect and equal justice. This does not refer to salvation per say because salvation is a free gift.
God reveals to us several judgment seats in heaven. One is exclusively for the wicked who will stand before a Great White Throne Judgment Seat of God.This event takes place after the millennium reign of Christ.Satan will be released from his bottomless pit for a short season and will deceive the nations once again. The numbers that follow him to fight against God will be vast.Yet, again they will be stopped in a final battle. Then Satan and the wicked will be raised to stand before this final judgment seat to be punished for every sin they ever committed. (Rev 20:5-15)Each will be rewarded with punishments according to the degrees or their sins.(Mat 23:14; Joh 19:11)
However, it does not appear Christians stand before that judgment seat. For those whose believe in Jesus and whose faith endures to the end, they shall stand before another judgment seat known as the “Bema” Judgment Seat.
“But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat (bema) of Christ.” (Rom 14:10)
This “bema” judgment is exclusively for those in Christ. In (Luk 14:14) the Lord makes it very plain that the rewards are going to be distributed at the time of the resurrection of the just.(Rev 20:4-6; Rev 22:12)
Some teach that the “Bema judgment seat” is only for rewards rendered on behalf of every good thing a Christian did in their life and no reflection of bad things done in the flesh will be mentioned. It is true that the Bible teaches that God promises not to remember (mention) our sins and iniquities (Heb 8:12, Heb 10:17) but that applies to those things we have acknowledged. But there are many things we do and have done that we have not acknowledged.God will deal with them when we face Him so we can give account and receive instruction for a better life in the Millennial.
“But I say unto you, That every idle (useless, non productive) word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.” (Mat 12:36)
We see here that even the meaningless things we say is taken into account by God.The Greek word in the text for “give” refers to rewards. It literally means a “pay off” or “to do something necessary in fulfillment of an obligation or expectation.”Notice also what the Apostle Paul said in his letter to the Corinthians.
“For we must all appear before the judgment seat (bema) of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”(2Co 5:10)
Paul’s past is littered with terrible sin for on many occasions he took it upon himself to punish Christians, even unto stoning and death.(Act 8:1-3)Still, Paul was not afraid to stand one day before the judgment of God.Just before he was martyred he wrote with calm eagerness this powerful truth.
“Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.” (2Ti 4:8)
Gods reward system is further illustrated in the parable of the talents recording in Mathew chapter twenty five.Jesus explained of different servants and their individual abilities.(They all had the goods)One received five talents, one received two talents and one received one talent.Based upon their individual wisdom and achievement they received rewards.
There was a reward rendered to the servant who did nothing with what he had?He received a negative reward.First, he was punished with a sharp denunciation. He was exposed as a slothful, wicked and unprofitable servant. The talent he had was taken away from him and given to the one who had gained the most. (This is capitalism not socialism?)Finally, the unprofitable servant was cast into a place of outer darkness where “there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.”This consequence fits with Jesus’ warning that those who blaspheme the Holy Spirit buy saying or thinking they could not do what God said they can do and should through the Holy Spirit. They are, “in danger of eternal damnation”.
God Gives and Takes
Jesus spoke often in parables. On one occasion the disciples asked Him why.So he explained.
“And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why do you speak unto them in parables? He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given. For whosoever hath, (has been given) to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:” (Mat 13:10-14)
Here again is another teaching of Jesus that helps us understand what He meant about the consequences of blaspheming the Holy Spirit. The mysteries of God can only be known through the blessed power of the Holy Spirit.God rewards the seeking believer with revelation.(“ask, and you shall receive, seek and you shall find”)Jesus explained that the more one receives from the Spirit the more they shall be given, even unto abundance.Paul received abundant revelation in His life as a reward for seeking God and doing His will. (2Co 12:1).Coming into Gods revelation was as much Paul’s prayer for us (Eph 1:17) as it is Jesus’.(Joh 17:15-26)
Then notice that those who reject the mysteries of God not only go without its reward, even the little they do know shall be taken from them. They lose the benefit of an enlightened mind.Their senses of God are dimmed and some can become so estranged that they are given over to a reprobate mind. (Rom 1:28) Among many things, this testifies of the sovereignty of God over the comprehensive abilities of men.
Blaspheming against any aspect of the Holy Spirit is dangerous because one is rejecting the very means by which one can be saved. It may be blasphemy against God giving revelations, or disbelief in divine miracles, healings, or opposition against Gods anointed teachers, preachers, and prophetic gift. But, it all falls under the same sin.If you discredit the Holy Spirits power, which is given to enables mortal men, you are not forgiven and you will suffer loss in this life and the next. But that doesn’t mean you will totally lose your salvation and go to hell.
Receiving your just Reward
As we come to faith in God, believers progress through various stages. We all start as mere disciples, searching and learning. As we grow God gives light. The opportunity to embrace that light is not always welcomed.Jesus said people reject the light because they “loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”(Joh 3:19)Receiving Gods light is a reward.
Paul wrote by inspiration of the Spirit that “…love believes all things…”People can say they love God but do they?Jesus spoke of hypocrite’s who say they love Him with their lips but “their heart is far from me.”(Mar 7:6)God measures a person’s love by the degree in which they believe what He says. Not all Christians “believe all things” God said. Most claim they believe the bible but they also tend to choose what scriptures apply to them and ignore the others.Others simply disagree with God and refuse to believe.
Everything concerning the Holy Spirit will greatly benefit a believer if they receive it.Yet, God wouldn’t expect anyone to believe something without evidence. So God has laid the foundation. The foundation of evidence is the scriptures.Every attribute of the Holy Spirit was carefully expounded upon in scripture so every believer can embrace the truth and receive its blessings.Every particular aspect of the Spirit is a blessing.
The tragedy is this; the same principle follows what you do not believe.Whenever someone doesn’t believe they tend to justify their rejection with verbal abuse. That is the start of blasphemy.Regarding the things concerning the Holy Spirit, whatever feature or aspect one rejects, if it results in blasphemy it will not be forgiven. It will be punished in measure.First, one loses the benefit of each and any aspect of the Holy Spirit, in this life.Yet, in the world to come, a Christian will also not be forgiven. What does this mean? They will lose in heaven the reward they could have received had they received the full features of the Holy Spirit.
For instance, in some Christian circles some insist that only pastors, teachers and evangelist are valid ministers for our generation. They decry the present day ministry of the apostolic and prophetic offices. They are big on looking to expose false prophets. It is a strange thing that they believe more in false prophets than the existence of true prophets.Yet, doesn’t the Bible state clearly that all five ministry gifts will be appointed by God; “until we all come into the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the son of God…”? (Eph 4:11-13)We haven’t reached that place yet have we?Well, is God a liar?No He is not!So, those ministries continue to be appointed by God, whether some believe in them or not.
Oh don’t misunderstand me, there are false prophets. We are commanded to try the spirits to see if they are of God.So it is not a sin to question someone who claims to be a prophet. To just flat out reject all who claim to be a prophet is a sin. However, it becomes blasphemy of the Holy Spirit if one speaks against a true prophet and what they are saying.
Speaking against any particular ministry gift of the Holy Spirit is to wound the reputation of the gift. You will not be forgiven; rather you lose the opportunity for greater reward. In a sense they have forfeited the benefits. If they were Christians, when they get to heaven their blasphemy against the Holy Spirit will result in great lose of reward.
What about those who mock the manifestations of the Holy Spirit? Those who slander ministers anointed with divine healing gifts are not forgiven?Generally they don’t get healed do they?Isn’t it proven that those who speak against the working of miracles go through life never experiencing miracles? Those that claim speaking in tongues is of the devil have blasphemed the Holy Spirit too.Through unbelief they don’t receive the gift and therefore don’t receive the benefits.
In fact God so closes their eyes that they don’t comprehend what the benefits are.Others mock Christians who say they received a message from God in a dream or vision. They claim it is foolishness.Yet, scripture tells us this is one way God speaks to His children. (Acts 2)Thus, they go through life never sensing God speaking to them and think that is the norm. Those mockers blaspheme the Holy Spirit. They will not be forgiven.Instead they suffer loss.
Apostle Paul Understood the Danger of Blaspheming
The Apostle Paul understood the danger of blasphemy. He turned two Christians over to Satan so they would learn not blaspheme.
“Of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander; whom I have delivered unto Satan, that they may learn not to blaspheme”. (1Ti 1:20)
Historians tell us that both Alexander and Hymenaeus were active members of the Church in Ephesus.Paul wasn’t being vindictive. His intent was to teach them so they would not hinder the work of God.If they continued in their error they were in danger of more than losing their full reward in this world, they were in danger of eternal damnation.
It seems Hymenaeus learned the lesson while Alexander didn’t.In Paul’s second letter to Timothy, four years later, Hymenaeus is dropped from the reprimand; but Alexander’s stubborn blasphemy apparently continued.
“Alexander the metal worker did me much evil: the Lord reward him according to his works: Of whom be thou ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.” (2Ti 4:13-14)
Alexander was not merely withstanding Paul the man but he was withstanding the Apostolic Ministry Gift of the Holy Spirit. In resisting Paul’s preaching Alexander was speaking against the Holy Spirit. If Christians understood this correctly there would be fewer ministers attacking other preachers.Christians need to understand that when they take liberty in criticizing their brothers in the Lord they are often criticizing the work of the Holy Spirit.
In his letter to the Corinthians Paul gave us further insight that ties together the Holy Spirits work in a believer along with Gods reward program for receiving the things of the Spirit. The Corinthian believers were still babes in Christ. They were filled with works of the flesh such as envy, strife and divisions. They were more caught up with their own importance than giving respect to the work of the Holy Spirit. Some preferred the ministry of Apollos while others preferred Paul.So Paul explained.
“I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that plants any thing, neither he that waters; but God is all things because He gives the increase. Now he that plants and he that waters are one: and EVERY MAN SHALL RECEIVE HIS OWN REWARD ACCORDING TO HIS OWN LABOR.For we are laborers together with God: you are God’s farmers, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise master builder, I have laid the foundation, and another builds upon… So then neither is he that plants any thing, neither he that waters; but it is God that gives the increase. Now he that plants and he that waters are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labor…. If any man’s work which he builds upon remains, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned, he shall suffer loss: (the is no forgiveness) but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”(1Co 3:8-15)
We have probably all spoken many things that hinder the ministry of the Holy Spirit.Yet, no matter how naively, every verbal attack against the Holy Spirit or His various anointings is a serious sin with consequence.Whether we know it or not we lose something, both in this life and the next. Therefore, let us stay humble like Moses, who “esteemed the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt…” because he had “respect unto the recompense of the reward.”(Heb 11:26)
In closing may I encourage you to look well unto something John wrote?“Look to ourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that wereceive a full reward.”(2Jn 1:8)
And let us remember the words of Jesus, “And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give to every man according as his work shall be.” (Rev 22:12)So work!So labor! Not against the Spirit but with the Spirit of God.
“Moreover, brethren, we want you to know of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia; How that in a great trial of affliction,…even in their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality… they were willing…; praying for us, with much earnest to receive the gift, and take upon the fellowship of the ministering to the saints… so too we desired Titus, that… he would also finish in you the same grace. Therefore, as you abound in every thing; faith, utterance, knowledge, in all diligence, and in your love to us… see that ye abound in this grace also.” (2Co 8:1-7)
People of “a baser sort” in and around Corinth had sought occasion to attack the motives of Paul. Knowing the “unlearned” Christians could be perverted by the accusations Paul was handicapped, but wisely suffered through it. Now as Paul writes to the Corinthians it is clear the Holy Spirit was leading them to greener pastures regarding the grace of God.
In this same letter to the Corinthians Paul explained what Jesus meant by teaching him: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is made perfect in weakness”. (2 Cor 12:9) Paul confirms this understood of “sufficient grace” to have a strong outcome in another reference written to the Roman Christians. He said; “they which receive abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness shall REIGN in life through Christ Jesus”. (Rom 5:17) No wonder Peter wrote; “grace be multiplied to you”. (2 Pet 1:2)
Financially supporting the Ministry of the Word is a feature of God’s grace. In fact, a favorite quote from Paul’s writings; “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” actually refers to him learning to both give and receive offerings. (Phil 4:10-19)
When Paul received an offering from Philippi he wrote back thanking them. In his thank you he explained how he learned through God instructing him to “be full and to be hungry, to abound and suffer need.” Then he added that bold statement of faith; “I can do all things…” Specifically he was speaking of “giving and receiving”. In him statement “I do not frustrate the grace of God” (Gal 2:21) Paul was teaching us to be obedient in all things by depending on God’s grace to supply sufficiently.
Using a promise of reward Paul encourages Christians to give. “But this I say, He which sows sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which sows blessing shall reap also blessings.” (2 Cor 9:6) God’s principle of sowing and reaping promises reciprocation.
“Every man according as he purposes in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loves a cheerful giver.” (2 Cor 9:6)
Paul lays out four important guidelines for giving from the heart. We are remiss to limit the grace of giving to this exclusively for the scripture has much more to say about how we are to give. But giving with the right attitude is important. If you cannot give with a proper attitude you’re probably better off not giving. Get your faith and love aligned with God first then offer your gift.
Paul further encourages us in the grace of giving with another reminder of promise. “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:” (2Co 9:7-8) God’s grace involves all things that pertain to our life; both spiritual and practical. Sufficiency of all things comes from the work of grace. But the process is ordered. You have to practice the grace of giving before you will enjoy the grace of reaping.
“For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.” (2 Cor 8:9)
Does Paul refer to Jesus’ application of spiritual things, practical things or both? Scholars differ, tending to take a stand on one side or the other. I suggest the “two edged sword” applies here, meaning both streams of thought fit.
Spiritually speaking, In His pre-existence Jesus was always deity. As the Word of God He was possessor of the richness of the Godhead. But when He, “the Word of God was made flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14) He stripped Himself of those riches to become mortal (becoming poor). Why? So those will believe on Him could be made rich spiritually. This is a common explanation of that reference.
However, there is the practical side to consider. The context is very important. Read the verses both before and after Paul’s statement. Read the whole chapter. Paul was addressing the issue of collecting offerings for the Work of the Ministry.
One of the oddities of Jesus’ initial entrance into fulltime ministry is that His “friends” thought He was “beside Himself”. (Mark 3:21-31) A comparison of the other gospels suggests these “friends” were His brothers, sisters and mother. One translation says they thought He had gone “mad”, another, “he had lost His mind”. Why; because He suddenly left his trade entered into the fulltime ministry of teaching, preaching and healing. And probably worse in their mind was that He also immediately started inviting others; like Peter, James, John and all His disciples to forsake their jobs and possessions, take up their cross and follow Him in laboring for and trusting the heavenly Father.
All His years Jesus was a carpenter, not a Leviticus minister. Carpentry was and is now a skill that provided decent compensation. There is not much evidence in scripture that this means Jesus was a rich man but there is something to consider. Jesus lived under the Mosaic Covenant. That Covenant had the promise of great blessings, including financial ones. (Deut 28:1-14) The blessings were governed by conditions.
“And it shall come to pass, if you shall hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD your God, to observe and to do all his commandments… And all these blessings shall come on you, and overtake you…” (Deut 28:1-2)
No doubt, Jesus was the greatest keeper of the Covenant? Wouldn’t you say He was the most diligent, the most observant and the most earnest doer of all God’s commandments? So the characterization that Jesus was a literal rich man on the earth is not far fetched.
When it was His time to sacrifice His mortal life for us Jesus began by giving up His earthly possession. (Matt 4:18-21, Mark 10:20-31) He forsook all as an example because in coming to Him all would have to give up things to follow Him. Jesus gave His body as our spiritual sacrifice but He started the process with a grace to give up His possessions too. (Matt 8:20)
“For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshipers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.” (Heb 10:1-4)
Continuing to highlight one of the “better promises” of the New Covenant – a purged conscience – the writer injects another interesting point.
Consider carefully the phrase “For the law havinga shadow of good things to come”. Many Christians today make the mistake of giving no regard to the Old Testament and its Law. Reading some scriptures that speak about the imperfections of the Mosaic Law and it having been done away with, they think none of it matters anymore. In that they miss out on many blessings promised in the New Covenant.
There are two areas to give attention too. The Law was a shadow of the good things in the New Covenant - yes. But, the Law of Moses also is a shadow of things to come in our future estate in heaven.
We need to understand what is in our future and how we will function in perfect order. Just as the Hebrew writer explains features in Jesus’ present day ministry in heaven, as our High Priest, the teaching also helps us see that heaven is a place of perfect order, with rules, regulations and formality. We will be ruled in heaven by Laws similar too, but greater than the imperfect Old Law of Moses. Most Christians have little to no concept of the order and discipline that presides in Heaven and will preside over us.
The Revelation of Jesus Christ; given to the Apostle John on the island of Patmos (Rev 1:1-9) offers great insight of the orderly way heaven is fashioned. So does the book of Hebrews, and so does the Law of Moses. In heaven there is protocol, there is reverence and there is awe.
If you think that when you get to Heaven, you’ll be “free as a bird”, in the sense that you will be at liberty to do and think as you want, think again. You will conform to God’s will or not be there.
Earth too will experience the perfect Law of God carried out in a manner that is shadowed in the Mosaic Law. At the time that Jesus returns to establish peace, it will be according to a greater moral law than that of Moses. Yes, Jesus will return as our eventful peacemaker. But He will establish it by engaging in a violent war against evil. Jesus will not appease evil. He will not reason with evil. He will destroy evil and those who resist Him powerfully and with righteous judgments. Both the prophets who spoke during the season of Moses’ Law, and the prophets of the New Covenant have prophesied of those events. (Rev 19:9-21)
Good things are coming. However, before that era of peace on earth is established, judgment and chastening will precede it. The bloodiest war on earth will come first. But that battle will not be in the hands of vacillating politicians who seek power and influence, instead of true righteousness. Polls will not dictate the direction of that war. It will be decisively engaged by God’s Righteous Law.
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.” (Rev 19:11)
Consider Jesus Our High Priest “Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; (Heb 3:1)
Like a good salesman striving to sell his product, the Hebrew writer briefly pointed out many fine and commonly known features of Jesus. Now in chapter three he begins to focus on his main point – a feature that is deeper and of higher value. He asks us to consider the Apostolic and High Priestly ministry of Jesus.
Few Christians understand the significance of Jesus as our High Priest. Probably this is because most of us are Gentles and unfamiliar with the Priesthood as dictated in the Law of Moses. However, consider that the Priesthood was a holy and separated position, greatly respected and revered as God best. The High Priesthood was the most sacred and honored position and placement of all Priests and Israelites.
Since the Priesthood, and particularly the High Priesthood is (not was) the highest position under the Law, we should understand it to be God’s best place of ministry. No mere prophet is seated at God’s right hand. And, while Jesus is King of Kings and has entered into the heavens to receive His Kingdom, it is not His Kingship position that is mentioned at God’s right hand, it is His High Priesthood title that is acknowledged and honored. (Heb 8:1, Heb 10:11-12)
This leads to the another reason people don’t understand the significance of the Priesthood. A case can be made that many Christians are not in the market for God’s best. Some are simply not ready, willing or able to pay the price for understanding the deeper and better things of God. Remember how Barnabas is mentioned and his progress toward a deeper commitment is noted in scripture? (Acts 4:36-37)
Let me illustrate my point this way. In real-estate, middle class residents, and lower, do not go shopping for upper class homes. First, their budget does not allow it. Then, to be frank the realtor is not going to take someone to see a mansion if upon review they are not considered able to purchase it. Illustrating this spiritually, our budget is our commitment to faith, love, and holiness, while the realtor is the Bible teacher who doesn’t want to waste time showing lower level residents the high end market, knowing they are not yet ready or able to purchase it.
However, God inspired the profound message of Hebrews to lead us into a deeper understanding of Jesus and thus a deeper commitment to His cause. The epistle to the Hebrews is a revelation of Jesus that God wants all believers to consider, as well as see and embrace. Yet only one New Testament teacher was inspired to expound on Jesus’ High Priestly ministry. And when he (or she) did, it was done in splendid detail and profound insight.
Possibly, in some cases the lack of understanding Jesus’ present day ministry is caused by a lack of respect for this ministry. How many Christians have or had ears to hear it? (Matt 11:15) We know Jesus, at the end of His earthly ministry still had more things to teach His apostles but withheld those things for a season because they could not “bear them now”. (John 16:12-13) But then He added, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth:” In a few days, Jesus would rise from the dead and send the Spirit to them. Well, the Holy Spirit has now come to us. He is now ready, willing and able to guide us into all truth. Are you ready, willing and able to receive from Him? If there is a problem in our going forward and learning these things about God, it is usually not with God. This is probably why God showed His frustration through the Hebrew writer when He wrote: “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, you have need that someone teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk,..” (Heb 5:12)
The use of the phrase “are become” illustrates a similar thing Paul taught in Romans able how men who were created in the image of God had “become” depraved. (Rom 1:21-22) Except for one difference, the Hebrew writer was not speaking of mankind in general, but regenerate believers. This shows that not only can a Christian grow in the knowledge of God, they can also go backward. (Is 28:13)
Still, there is one further possibility for why most of the New Testament writers did not present anything pertaining to Jesus’ Priesthood except the exclusive Hebrew Epistle. Possibly God knew that most who come to Him will, by choice, remain babies and therefore choke on this spiritual “meat”. In certain cases God does choose to keep His people in the dark because they have not met the requirements for that reward in this life. “Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.” (Mat 13:13-15)
All Israelites were considered by God His children, but most were not given much revelation. Hopefully, that which God has revealed to me regarding the Book of Hebrews and its powerful healing message, I can convey to you successfully. Hopefully you are one of those who Jesus said of: “But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.” (Mat 13:16)
“Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;” (Heb 2:1-3)
We might take for granted the ministry of angels today, but the Hebrew writer does not. They played a huge part in his faith. He links the ministry of angels with our great salvation. He does not only speak here of the salvation we are most familiar with: becoming a new creature, receiving forgiveness of sins and eternal life. The salvation he refers to has wider meaning to include angelic ministry. The word salvation implies deliverance, rescue and assistance on every level: spirit, soul and body.
Angels engage in a vital part of the process of our great salvation. They are often sent by God to rescue, deliver, and direct us out of trials and temptations. They might bring a message to us or reveal something to us as a help in escaping any trial, temptation, or some demon onslaught against us.
Some self proclaimed believers, like the Sadducees of old, do not believe in angels. (Acts 23:8) They will tell you that God only ministers to us through the Holy Spirit today. That is wrong! Are we better than Jesus? Angels ministered to him. (Mark 1:13, Luke 22:43) Furthermore, when Paul was being taken to Rome to stand before Caesar, (as God had told him he must) crossing the Sea their ship was in peril for many days. Paul fasted and prayed. Notice, an angel brought him a message. ”And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man’s life among you, but of the ship. For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve, Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.” (Act 27:22-24)
Consider also, in the Book of Acts we are told that the apostle James was suddenly and brutally killed by King Herod. (Acts 12:1-2) Peter was also sought, soon found and would have been killed too, but because a Holy Feast of Israel had commenced, his execution was delayed. Read the story for yourself in its entirety and consider that this gave the church time to pray and make their petition to God on Peter’s behalf. (Prayer makes a difference, it can change things dramatically – Acts 12:12) If you read the story you’ll read that Peter was not anxious, neither was he fretting, worrying, wondering, or even sad that James had been martyred. Instead he was sound asleep, however in a jail, and bound by chains to two guards. An angel was sent and delivered him. “And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.” (Act 12:11)
Peter understood after he was supernaturally and spectacularly delivered, that it was an angel who directly delivered him. The Lord or the Holy Spirit directed this “great deliverance” but the agent was an angel. Wouldn’t you like to KNOW when angelic ministry is serving your needs? Or are you going to let those who have not given “earnest heed” to these things, have “neglected” this “great salvation” and let these truths slip from their faith?
The Hebrew writer said our “great salvation”,can be neglected. He then asks “How shall we escape if “we neglect” it? God’s great salvation includes the ministry of angels? God doesn’t neglect anything, but we can, and we often do! “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1Co 10:13)
God makes a way of escape from common temptations. But if you ignore it, or neglect it, or worse, refuse to believe it, is it God’s fault? Misinterpretation of scriptures has done much to add to our neglect. For instance, the teaching that claims God sends the trial that is tempting you. James heard that teaching in his day and addressed it boldly with purpose of clarity. “Blessed is the man that endures temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither temps he any man: But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.” (James 1:12-14)
James said “Let no man say” when he is tempted that God is doing it. So I’m not going to say it! Neither will I let my teachings lead you to think that nonsense. No one can stop you from letting someone else say it to you, and potentially spoil your faith, but not me. James said to endure the temptations. That’s what Peter, the church and Paul did under the circumstances they encountered. Peter seemed to expect deliverance! The church prayed for his deliverance, how many expected it we don’t know. But the point is, the early church was not as pacified in its faith and prayer as it is today. They knew to pray for a great salvation and therefore saw some.
Peter warned us not to think it strange concerning our trials. (1 Pet 4:12) As servants of God we should expect them. He later pointed out that Satan comes at us “like a roaring lion”. He taught that we can and should resist the devil steadfast in faith. (1 Pet 5:8-9) James said the same thing. (James 4:7)
Don’t let anyone, no matter how well meaning they may seem, lead you become passive in your faith toward God. God has made a way of escape for your every problem. Seek for it in prayer earnestly. Expect the way to be revealed to you.
Jesus: Seated at the Right Hand of God “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; (Heb 1:1-3) The Hebrew writer sets forth his first major point about the Son of God – reminding us not only what Jesus accomplished, but where He is – seated at the right hand of God the Father. The epistle actually mentions Jesus place before God four more times, (Heb 1:13, Heb 8:1, Heb 10:12, Heb 12:2) thus making this feature of Jesus a very important truth.
The fact that Jesus is seated at the right hand of God was a central doctrine of the apostles, therefore it should be with us today. It is emphasized throughout the New Testament. Peter recognized this truth and highlighted it in His first sermon after being filled with the Spirit on the day of Pentecost. “This Jesus has God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Until I make thy foes thy footstool.” (Act 2:32-35) I suggest the modern day church should diligently reflect on the fact that Jesus is at the right hand of God since it was a key doctrine of the apostles. Without question, the early church adhered to that doctrine because it was the apostle’s doctrine. (Acts 2:42) From the start of the church; on through to other leaders, this truth is highlighted.
Have you ever noticed that Peter reasoned that it is because Jesus is at the right hand of God (not because of the cross, His death, burial or even His resurrection) that the Holy Spirit’s power was sent to the church that day? This is an important doctrine! Grasping this truth will spur the church on to do greater things as God ambassadors.
We should also appreciate what Peter pointed about Jesus’ position at the right hand of God; it is a place for continued ministry. Notice, Jesus is seated at God’s right hand “UNTIL” all God’s foes are dethroned. Peter mentions it another time in his first epistle. Notice once again how he connects it with a continuing ministry - the dethroning of all powers and foes, resistant to God. “Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.” (1Pe 3:22) We know that all the apostles taught this truth by this next reference. After the outpouring of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost the apostles were soon called into question about their teachings. Consider how firmly they pointed to Jesus present day position in heaven. “But answering, Peter and the apostles said, “It is necessary to obey God rather than people! The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you murdered, having hanged [Him] on a tree [or, a cross]. This One God has exalted to His right hand [as] Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.” (Act 5:29-31 ALT)
How widespread and highlighted was Jesus’ position at God’s right hand? It went further than a doctrine of the apostles. Here is a reference regarding the deacon Stephen. He was given a spiritual vision (the gift of the Spirit called “the discerning of Spirits” Cor 12:10) and his eyes were opened to see into the spiritual realm. What did he see? He saw Jesus at the right hand of God. “But he, (Stephen) being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.(Act 7:55-56) The Godhead wanted Stephen to see Jesus at His right hand so God opened his eyes. It was this spiritual vision, which God initiated which incited the crowd of unbelievers to kill him. What I like most about this reference is that Stephen saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God, not seated. He stood up to watch Stephen, as if to cheer Him on in His victorious testimony and martyrdom. Stephen was not an unwise martyr who should be blamed for being too radical. His martyrdom was not self infused, but God inspired for it was God who opened Stephen’s eyes and caused Him to testify what He saw.
Stephen told what He saw to saints and sinners at that moment - including a man named Saul who would soon be converted through the providence of God on the Damascus road. I am convinced that what Stephen saw stuck with Saul and troubled him. When Jesus later appeared to Saul a key point of reference was “it is hard for you to kick against the pricks”. (Acts 9:5) Saul was struggling inside his soul with nagging feelings of remorse for what he was doing in persecuting Christians. God used the events surrounding Stephen, especially his spiritual vision to deeply affect Saul, the great persecutor. Saul understood the significance of one so great that he was at the right hand of a sovereign.
After his conversion Saul would soon change his name to Paul and became one of, if not the greatest servants of God. He became a world changer. Note, as Paul grew in his knowledge and revelation of God, what God revealed to Paul regarding His position at the right hand of God. “And (to know) what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:” (Eph 1:19-21) Here we see what was accomplished at Jesus’ resurrection and His appointed position at God’s right hand. The connection of Jesus’ position in heaven is highlighted as being a direct position of authority over all powers and authorities who remain foes of God. Jesus’ position is superior to all other things that are created and named. When we call upon Jesus, as He instructed the church (John 16:24) in time of need, Jesus immediately intercedes to the Father on our behalf to dethrone the spiritual entities working against us. Jesus’ mastery and superior power is exceedingly great toward us who believe.
Paul’s revelation of Jesus’ highest position in heaven goes deeper. In this next reference I want you to see both that Paul exhorts us to focus on Jesus position at God’s right hand as well as understand why. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sits on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. (Col 3:1-2)
We are raised with Christ (spiritually) when and if we receive Jesus as our Lord and are Born Again. This involves us coming to faith in the cross of Jesus. Afterward, we are to advance forward as soldiers of Christ. We are to seek higher. We are to seek those things that are going where Jesus is seated, now at the right hand of our Father. What is going on there? Constant, constructive, intense communication on issues regarding the saints! “Who is he that condemns? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.” (Rom 8:34)
Now we see a key reason the doctrine of Jesus being at the right hand of God is so meaningful. We see what He is doing there – interceding for us. Going back to the Hebrew reference where it says when Jesus finished purging our sins, afterward He sat down at God’s right hand; it was not for Him to rest or take His ease. Rather, it is the key position in which to continue His ministry on our behalf. In Heb 7:25 the writer points out that Jesus “ever lives to make intercession” for us – the saints.
Jesus is still at work on our behalf because we still need working on, even after we are sovereignty decreed “the righteousness of God” (2 Cor 5:12) through Christ. Jesus’ work was not finished at the cross, as some claim. (His statement on the cross; “It is finished” refers to the final prophetic fulfillment before He would give up the ghost: the vinegar that was to be given to Him on behalf of His thirst. (John 19:28-30, Ps 69:21).
The point is this; no Christian has arrived at the place God predestined us to be; as of yet. God has forgiven us our sins, and He has purges us from them, and has also given us the light of life. But as long as we are in this human body and therefore we still fall short daily of His glory and kingdom. A spiritual war surrounds us. We are assured therefore that Jesus, who is at the Fathers right hand, continues to make intercession for us regarding those shortcomings. That is a part of the promised covenant providing us in His “full redemption”. He is not finished with us; thank God! One day we will be spotless, having no wrinkle or blemish. Jesus will continue to tend to that business until we become completely satisfying to Him.
Many Christians enjoy this blessing not caring to understand the actual and literal process Jesus is still undertaking on our behalf. He sustains us. However, we should take note of this effort. Why? For the same reason it was such a critical doctrine at the beginning. The early Church leaders had mammoth results because they understood and held this doctrine so dear.
It is God’s desire that every believer grow into the knowledge of Jesus’ present day ministry. Again, someone will asks; why? So they too will grow up spiritually and take an active place in that service, working with Jesus. How? By preaching, teaching, praying, and interceding for others, and so much more, as the Bible lays out similar duties Jesus set forth for us to follow.
We are His body on the earth – His spiritual body. (Heb 3:3-6) Much of what He brings to the Father’s petition is brought to Him through us – our prayers and ministry. As we surrender our life to Him, day by day, piece by peace, He is able to use us in His work. What sings in your soul? He hopes: “Take another little peace of my heart Lord Jesus”
Soon, Jesus will leave His heavenly place to return and finally put down all opposition. He will remove those principalities, powers and rulers of the darkness of this world which constantly attack us in spirit, soul and body. Then His perfected work will be manifest in us, not merely be decreed of us.
The Hebrew writer sets forth his first major point about the Son of God – reminding us not only what Jesus accomplished, but where He is – seated at the right hand of God the Father. My Supernatural Experience with The Book of Hebrews
No other book in the Bible focuses as much on one particular subject than the Book of Hebrews. Great truths are expounded on throughout the Bible: love, faith, righteousness, grace, the cross, the resurrection, etc. All of those subjects and many more are major points of the New Testament. Still, no single writer gave such intense coverage of one single truth as the writer of Hebrews. The inspired and insightful focus is on Jesus’ present day ministry as our High Priest.
Of all the books of the Bible however, the Book of Hebrews is probably the most neglected and least studied by Christians. I suggest this is proved by the fact that most Christians remain focused more on Jesus’ past ministry (on the cross) than on His present ministry.
Let me share how God initially got my attention on the Book of Hebrews. Most of you are familiar with my testimony. When I was eighteen, my mother was diagnosed with kidney cancer. She was rushed to the hospital for surgery. That day I knelt down in a small bathroom and called on Jesus, begging God to take my life instead of hers. I didn’t know anything about God, but I pleaded with my whole heart. At that moment I was Born Again as God’s “peace that passes all understanding” consumed me. I didn’t know anything about God or His word. Not one Bible term was familiar to me, including the New Birth. But at that moment I knew God was real, that He heard my prayer and that He would spare my mother. He did!
Not knowing anything about God, how to be continually reinforced with His presence, or the importance of learning the Bible and fellowshipping with other true believer, my conversion didn’t stick. I recall saying at that time “How long will I live for God - two weeks? But I gave it my all, bringing every thought to God. But exactly as I stated, in two weeks I gave out. Overwhelmed with guilt I assessed I was to far gone for God to care about and for the next seven years threw caution to the wind.
From that time I would say something new in conversation. Usually spontaneously, flippantly and with no reasoned purpose I’d say; “I am going to die before my twenty-fifth birthday.” People would roll their eyes or say I was a nut, but seven years later, two weeks before my birthday, I expected to die by some tragedy.
To make the testimony brief, I did die that night, but not as I expected. I died to myself as God soon explained to me.
One night, directed to watch a Christian program, through divine providence and the power of the Holy Spirit my most intimate thoughts were exposed and God gloriously touched me anew. God rescued me that second time and the experience was exactly as before; that inward “peace” and “knowledgeof God” came to me just as the first time.
People often think of the New Birth as a one time thing, but there are also fresh, deeper conversions to God throughout our life if we will let God lead us. Consider for instance, Simon Peter. He was a converted believer to Christ when the Lord said this to him. “And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.” (Luke 22:31-32)
Anyway, that night I received my call into the ministry. By that time things from the Bible were familiar to me; having one Christian friend who was trying to explain things to me. But up to that night, every time I tried to read the Bible on my own I could not comprehend things. Trust me, I was trying to understand, and it would frustrate me, because by this time I truly believed the Bible was God’s Word. Just a year before, I was in a bar, dead drunk and got into an argument with a guy who said the Bible was nonsense. I flattened him, shouting, “I may not know the Bible and certainly don’t live it, but I’ll defend it as God’s Word”.
Among the many miracles that happened to me that night was this particular event. Picking up the Bible I randomly opened it and began to read. I seemed to be raining however, as I needed to wipe wet drops from the page. Suddenly I realized it was my tears dropping forced to flow as I was moved by reading the most personal and tender love letter - from God to me.
Coming out of my haze I looked and saw that I was reading (and understanding things) from the Book of Hebrews. When we are cleansed and open to Jesus He reveals the scriptures to us. “And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures” (Luke 24:44-45)
Over the years the Book of Hebrews has been a valuable study for me. However, it was not until this new phase in my walk that I see things so much clearer. I’m convinced, that night, the Lord knew where I would be years later in my life and accentuated this epistle as one I would desperately need to comprehend. It is now my conviction that God has opened up my understanding on this book to share God’s powerful and Present Day Ministry as our faithful and mighty High Priest.
